Y5/6 Girls 5-a-side football competition

The girls had a very successful sunny day competing against 30 other teams on in the Wandsworth Primary Schools Girls Football Competition.  The girls drew their first match and then went on to win 5 consecutive games before losing to Honeywell, the eventual winners of the competition.

The girls finished 2nd in their league and were drawn against Holy Ghost in the quarter finals of the tournament.  After an intense battle during full time and extra time there was still no winning team and the result had to be decided by penalty shootouts.  After some epic saves from both goal keepers the game still couldn't be decided and went to nail biting 'sudden death' penalties.  Luck wasn't on our side and unfortunately we lost the match at the last hurdle.  Holy Ghost progressed to the final where they were beat 1-2 by Honeywell, the only schools we lost against on the day.

Despite the heart breaking exit out of the tournament the girls should be really proud of their hard work, effort, organisation and team work  they exemplified throughout the competition.

Griffin awarded Gold Club status for exceptional educational achievements

Griffin has been awarded Gold Club status under a scheme set up by the Mayor of London Boris Johnson to recognise exceptional schools in the capital. The Gold Club is part of the Mayor's drive to boost standards and raise attainment for all schoolchildren wherever they live in the capital and regardless of background.

London’s schools continue to outperform the rest of the country with last year’s GCSE results showing the city as the top English region for the sixth consecutive year.

In highlighting and celebrating schools that are 'bucking the trend', especially those that have pupils with previously low attainment, the aim is to inspire even more schools in London to strive for similar academic success and offer them the chance to learn from the Gold Club schools.

Griffin has been awarded Gold Club status, because the school has enabled pupils to make excellent academic progress over the last few years.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson commented: 'Congratulations to Griffin Primary for its outstanding achievements and for the hard work of its pupils and teaching staff. London schools are going from strength to strength and our Gold Club members are testament to the fact all schools can aspire to attain excellence for all their pupils, whatever their circumstances. The Gold Club is a great platform for schools to share their bright ideas and approaches to enable every one of their pupils to achieve terrific results.”

113 schools have been awarded Gold Club status in 2015, the third year the scheme. They are being asked to share their good practice through seminars and hosting visits to their school so that other schools can learn from a range of approaches that have delivered success and achieved extraordinary performance of their pupils.

Mr Beazeley said, "The school - pupils, parents, staff and Governors - should be very proud of this achievement. Mrs Peyton and the Griffin staff over the last few years deserve great credit for their hard work and commitment to supporting the development of our pupils. Only 7% of London schools have received this accolade so it really is amazing!"

They investigated labels to see where food had travelled from and did other work on food colours. This followed up their work on the cacao bean and the 'Journey of Chocolate.'

100 Word Challenge: new prompt

See here for last week's post that introduced 100wc.

Here is the latest 100 Word Challenge for those interested in writing on pen and paper or using a blog to write. Please see Mr Beazeley if you want to join our Writers Blog (click here to see it). It's also accessible via a link on the top right of this blog too.
From the 100wc site
For Week#6 we are back to part of a sentence. Remember the prompt can go anywhere in your work BUT it must make sense and be the prompt as it is written. It is:
…it felt like..
Before you start writing, think of all the things you can touch & how they feel. What fabulous words can you think of to describe what you are experiencing? It might be an idea to close your eyes before you start and try touching a few things but make sure they are not harmful!

Wandsworth Primary Schools Y5/6 Boys 5-a-side competition
The boys had an enjoyable day of competitive football at Wandle Leisure Centre this week.  The team worked really hard and were very well disciplined defensively and creative on the attack.    The boys behaviour and sportsmanship on the day were commendable. The team finished 4th within their league of 8 teams: this is even more of a respectable result considering most of our team consisted of Y5s.
